You don't have to learn about meta tags and other HTML/PHP code. Thesis provides you nice interface to update title, metatags etc right from WP admin panel.

Re: Getting Django up and running with Hostgator Part 2: Enable FastCGI

See that kinda threw me too. Tell me, how does Thesis work when you are collaborating with a designer who wants to implement a custom design that doesn't match any of the options that your framework provides? Or do you only build sites that can work within the Thesis framework? Or do you do all the design yourself?

My preference is to have a template system that does its best to separate design from function, so that designers can make the best design and developers can make a user-friendly, functional site. I tend to build websites as part of a team, not as a single person. The last thing a designer wants to hear from a developer is 'sorry, the framework just won't do that'.

I think Thesis succeeds on having a large support community and a considerable amount of marketing power. That being said, there are a lot of better looking themes out there that you can customize just as much, notably, anything from graph paper press or woo themes. Smashing Magazine just had a great review of free Wordpress themes just a few months ago: http://www.smashingmagazine...

Re: Disadvantages of the Thesis theme for WordPress

What you are missing (and the reason Thesis is being used by huge numbers of people) is that there are far more people out there who don't know HTML/CSS and don't want to have to learn it to build an SEO-friendly, reasonably attractive site. I have built roughly 20 sites, 5 with polished themes, 15 with Thesis. I greatly prefer Thesis. I don't need to know HTML/CSS to do the sites, the clients love them, I can update them easily, there is a big support community for customization needs. The fixed themes hold you hostage because if they aren't supported over time you're screwed. I've yet to have a client unhappy with Thesis, quite a few who ended up unhappy with the fixed them route. My $.02.

Re: Getting Django up and running with Hostgator Part 2: Enable FastCGI

Hmm, are you actually using those double-quotes around "public_html/dev" and do you have a public_html folder *inside* of your public_html folder? Also, keep in mind that you have to have a django folder *outside* (ABOVE) your public_html folder with a folder called 'projects'...which contains your 'newprojects' project

Re: Getting Django up and running with Hostgator Part 2: Enable FastCGI

Being on HostGator - I have completely followed your instructions but am still getting a Internal Server Error. Granted I am a total Python/Django newb! So the only differences is that I have setup Django in a subdomain named dev. I have pathed my 4 lines in the .fcgi file to /home/my-username/public_html/dev/django "public_html/dev" being the one major difference. The troubleshooting with "which python" matched your results. Now this could just be the total newb part but when i type in dev.my-site.com it comes up with a 404 forbidden, when I type in dev.my-site.com/index.fcgi I get the Internal Server Error.

Was hoping you may have some ideas.
Thanks!

Re: Disadvantages of the Thesis theme for WordPress

I personally don't recommend Thesis, but to each his own. I started out using general wp themes and when I realized they were impossible for the noob (that I was) to edit the layout and design easily, I began to look around. I quickly became disappointed to think I would have to fork out my cash for a new theme every time I wanted a new design for a site. That is when I discovered Thesis. It was a life saver for me. My ability to customize my sites has grown exponentially.

The very ability to edit within Thesis was the reason I invested in it. There is a lot about the general wordpress editing you refer to that I am not an expert in but when I was looking for help online I found the WP support to be confusing and not user friendly. There is so much support within the Thesis site and 3rd party Thesis sites, that when i look for an answer now I always find it (many times immediately).

Quite possibly it isn't the best working framework for large intensive sites that require a lot of maintenance. I don't know. I do know my custom_functions.php file grows larger with every site I build and with good housekeeping it isn't difficult to locate the code I am looking for.

Maybe this would have helped you and your designer improve your Thesis experience:
It is good coding practice to label the parts of your code with
comments. Besides helping you remember what a block of code does after
time has passed, it helps others read your code more easily. Comment
marks are also useful to temporarily disable a block of code.

There are two ways to put comments into PHP: one method for single
lines, and another for multiple lines. Single-line comments are preceded
by two right slashes “//”. Multiple-line comments are preceded by “/*”
and ended with “*/”.

Either of these kinds of comments can be used for
single lines and may be placed at the end of a line of code.

Anyway to each his own, but it really seemed to me like you were out to give Thesis a bad rap from the outset so I thought I would add an honest Thesis users opinion.

After over a year of using Thesis I highly recommend it if you are new to web design coding like I was and want to be able to turn out a finished site in minimal time.

Re: Disadvantages of the Thesis theme for WordPress

Great article! I too only found praising articles but not enough information on what exactly one can do with Thesis.
